It started with a look ... The importance of acknowledging customers

How many times have you entered a store and you feel that you have somehow become invisible?  It seems to happen to me on a far to regular basis.

Imagine this scenario - you go round to someones home and one of the people that you are visiting just ignores you, continuing with what ever they were doing.  You are likely to feel pretty uncomfortable, or think that they are somewhat lacking in terms of social etiquette.  Yet this happens regularly in businesses, from stores and shops to businesses receptions.

We need to start thinking of our working environments as our space, and those who enter it as our visitors.  We need to make sure that people are made to feel welcome and appreciated as visitors. The simplist and most effective way of doing this is to acknowledge their presence and greet them appropriately. I don't think that this means that every store I visit needs a greeter on the front door, that somehow tends to make me feel that it is a  little ungenuine. I would much rather someone who is working, just gives me eye contact and says hello. It isn't difficult to do, but it makes a whole world of difference to my experience.
